BOOK A CLEANERThis Health and Safety policy sets out the principles and procedures that guide our cleaning operations in and around Shepherd's Bush. Our aim is to provide safe and healthy working conditions for cleaners, clients, visitors, and members of the public who may be affected by our work.
We are committed to complying with all relevant health and safety legislation, approved codes of practice, and industry guidelines applicable to cleaning services, including domestic, office, retail, and communal area cleaning.
The main objectives of this Health and Safety policy are to prevent accidents and work-related ill health, manage workplace risks effectively, and promote a culture of safety awareness and responsibility among all cleaners and supervisors.
We will regularly review our methods, cleaning products, and equipment to ensure that they remain safe, appropriate, and efficient for use in homes, offices, and other premises within our service area.
Management is responsible for implementing and maintaining this policy and for providing clear instructions, training, and supervision to ensure safe working practices. This includes assessing risks, selecting suitable cleaning agents and equipment, and ensuring that equipment is maintained in a safe condition.
Management will ensure that all cleaners are informed about this policy, understand their responsibilities, and have access to information on safe working procedures relevant to their tasks and locations.
All cleaners must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. They are required to follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, and cooperate with management in all health and safety matters.
Cleaners must report accidents, near misses, hazards, defective equipment, and unsafe conditions to their supervisor as soon as practicable. They must not undertake any task for which they have not received appropriate training or instruction.
Risk assessments will be carried out for all regular cleaning activities, including but not limited to floor cleaning, window cleaning (within safe reach), washroom cleaning, handling of chemicals, and waste removal. These assessments will be reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes to work practices, premises, or equipment.
Findings from risk assessments will be used to develop safe systems of work. Cleaners will receive guidance on site-specific risks such as access routes, emergency exits, fire procedures, security rules, and any special client requirements.
All cleaning products will be selected and used in line with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety data. Hazardous substances will be controlled through appropriate measures, including correct dilution, labelling, and storage.
Cleaners will be trained to read and understand product labels and safety information, to avoid mixing chemicals, and to ensure adequate ventilation when using sprays or strong cleaning agents. Protective equipment must be worn where specified for particular products or tasks.
Where necessary, appropriate personal protective equipment, such as gloves, eye protection, footwear with good grip, and protective clothing, will be provided. Cleaners must use this equipment as instructed and report any defects or loss immediately.
Personal protective equipment is considered a last line of defence and will be used alongside other control measures, such as safe handling techniques and properly maintained tools and machinery.
Manual handling tasks, such as moving vacuum cleaners, buckets, or bags of waste, will be assessed and avoided or reduced where possible. Cleaners will be trained to lift and carry loads safely, use trolleys or other aids where available, and avoid over-reaching or twisting.
Work will be organised to minimise awkward postures, repetitive movements, and extended periods of bending or kneeling. Breaks will be encouraged as appropriate to reduce the risk of strains and musculoskeletal issues.
Cleaning tasks can create temporary slip and trip hazards, particularly when floors are wet or when equipment and cables are in use. Cleaners must display warning signs when mopping floors, work systematically to keep walkways clear, and remove or report any hazards such as damaged flooring or trailing cables.
Footwear with appropriate non-slip soles must be worn. Cleaners must take extra care when working on stairs, using step stools, or cleaning near changes in floor level.
All electrical cleaning equipment, such as vacuum cleaners and floor machines, will be maintained in safe working order and inspected regularly. Cleaners must check equipment visually before use and must not use any item that appears damaged or faulty.
Electrical equipment must only be used as instructed and plugged into suitable sockets. Cleaners must avoid pulling machines by their cables and must keep cables away from water or other liquids.
Working at height will be kept to a practical minimum. Only suitable equipment, such as stable step stools or small step ladders, may be used, and only by cleaners who have been instructed in their safe use. Improvised methods, such as standing on chairs or unstable surfaces, are strictly prohibited.
Where window or high-level cleaning cannot be safely carried out from floor level or with safe steps, alternative arrangements will be considered, and work will not proceed until a safe method has been agreed.
All accidents, incidents, near misses, and cases of work-related ill health must be reported promptly to management. Records will be kept and reviewed to identify trends and opportunities for improvement in our cleaning operations.
Cleaners will be made aware of the emergency procedures for each site they attend, including fire evacuation routes, assembly points, and first aid arrangements. They must follow any site-specific instructions and cooperate fully with site management in the event of an emergency.
Initial and ongoing training will be provided to ensure that cleaners understand this policy and are competent to carry out their duties safely in a variety of premises in the Shepherd's Bush area and surrounding neighbourhoods.
We encourage cleaners to raise any concerns or suggestions regarding health and safety. This policy will be reviewed regularly and updated as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, best practice, and the nature of our cleaning work.
By following this Health and Safety policy, we aim to deliver reliable, high-quality cleaning services while protecting the wellbeing of everyone affected by our activities.
